O Ring 'O Dear'

At the base of the automatic gearbox dipstick tube there is a small rubber O ring. Mine failed blew oil out covering not only the underside of my car but also left a fine residue on some of the bodywork and side windows. I had to be recovered home, my gearbox removed, sent for testing, (No fault) It was only after the box was being rebuilt on the bench that the O ring was discovered and considered a potential cause. Bear in mind that when I first stopped I topped up with 1.5 ltrs of ATF before trying to continue home and 40 miles later had lost nearly 2 litres more! With so much oil under the car it was impossible to diagnose the cause / location of the leak.
