A4LD Automatic Gearbox (Oil level checking)
We have been asked this question a few times so hopefully this will be a useful tip.
With the engine up to running temperature. Handbrake firmly applied, select P (Park) Open the bonnet. When the engine has idled for a minute remove the gearbox dip-stick (taking care as it will be hot in the engine bay) wipe the dip-stick on a suitable cloth, re-insert the dipstick fully and then remove and check the oil level. The oil level should be between the two markers on the dipstick. Should the box require topping up use the correct grade of ATF and fill via the dipstick tube using the nozzle that is supplied with the fluid. Only add a little fluid at a time to avoid the possibility of overfilling and keep checking the level after each top up.
The A4LD Gearbox is not one of Fords best / strongest Gearboxes and with this in mind I regularly check the oil level. I also did a complete oil change about four years ago (2009). I have also always changed the oil on any auto box’s where the oil appears to be darker or contaminated.
